Henry O'Malley is a trained, competent killer who has worked as a covert assassin for the CIA for long enough to hate his job. He knows too much about too many dirty deals to leave government work with a pat on the back and a nice innocent pension. Blackmail. He knows how to use it and does - - to make sure he can retire with benefits.

Sarah is a trained, competent killer, too. But there's something wrong. She empathizes with the people she kills. It's an occupational hazard unknown among her cohorts. It's also understandable; Sarah is an alien - - even on her alien home planet. There's no resigning from her job. So, she does the next best thing; she stows away on a spaceship. Too bad it's captained by a sadist.

Henry parlays his way into what he thinks will be a cush job in Albuquerque at a secret, government-funded, extraterrestrial research organization. Of course, no one expects any spaceships to actually land on earth. Of course, everyone is wrong.

LITTLE GREEN MEN is part thriller, part intergalactic - - or maybe, interspecies - - romance, and part mainstream novel. Though the combination may sound odd, it works. The author, Karen Williams, uses multiple points-of-view to great effect as she explores the realities and perceptions of her two main protagonists. Both Henry and Sarah are damaged people who have kept their emotions tightly in check. Through light years and deep space, they somehow connect and begin to heal.

The book has some flaws. Remember those points-of-views? Well, there are too many. Williams could have stopped with Henry's and Sarah's and ended up with a much tighter novel. That said, Williams has written an intelligent and entertaining book. It's a heck of a ride with everything a reader could want - - good descriptions, believable and multidimensional characters, imbecilic villains, snappy action scenes. . . and heart.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants a fun, quick-paced and spirited read.
